Summer reading tips for parents

Reading Requirements for 6th Grade School Students
Students and their families should select at least two books from the attached list to read this summer. If a book is difficult, a parent or tutor may read the book with the student as the student follows along in his or her copy of the book. Students may also listen to an unabridged recording of the book while following along (Learning Ally, WYNN, or e-readers are very helpful for this).
• For one book, the student should prepare a colorful poster, a Powerpoint, a video, a diorama or any reasonable and creative way to demonstrate what you learned from the book. For the second book, the student should write a three paragraph review of the book. Directions and suggestions for each reading response are included in the template links below.
• Students who attend Woodlynde’s Summer Reading Program are required to read and complete a project for one book. (They may read more books and do more posters, but only one book and poster are required.) Students who attend Woodlynde’s Summer Reading Program will be completing a written project using the book The Kite Fighters by Linda Sue Park. Students who are not involved in the summer program may use this book as one of their summer reading books.

Students are required to read two (2) books over the summer.  Book choices may be made from a list we have provided on this web site. Many books are also available through Reading Ally or a commercially recorded CD.

We require that all middle school students complete (2) two book reports.  The template for the reports is included as a link on this website. These reports are due Friday, September 6th.  The two reports combined will be worth 10 percent of the student's first quarter grade.  Because of the large number of reports that will be turned in, this due date is firm.

All reports handed in after the due date will receive no credit.

Math Assignments
Your current teacher will give you a math packet to be completed for next school year. Please be sure to read the instructions before printing or starting your work. Be patient, some of the files have pictures and may take a few seconds to load. You can copy and paste the document into a word processor of your choice or print the document and fill out by hand. Math packets are also due on the first day of class.
